\u201cHe is ecstatic,\u201d said Dana Green, Clayton’s mother. \u201cThis means a lot to him as he will be ending his Legend career and moving into a Modified next year. He is happy to have ended his Legend career at his home track winning the championship.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Green entered the night, and the final race of the season \u2013 where a purse of $10,000 was on the line for the Legend class at HMP, needing a strong finish to wrap up the 2013 track championship and that is exactly what he got.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But it wasn’t easy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Green had to battle the biggest Legend car field of the season at HMP in the Harvey 30. And despite racing up front for most of the night, he did have to fight through some adversity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI didn’t expect to go back to fifth,\u201d Green said. \u201cMy car was set up for, hopefully, 30 green flag laps. The car was loose, more than expected. I knew my car would come in, but it was difficult at first to get it down on the bottom (of the track). This allowed them to get under me. Once my car came in, I was able to pull a car length or more each lap. I knew if I remained focused and consistent with each lap and took my time, I would find my way back to the front. That hard work brought me back into the lead.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From there, Green battled it out with Derek Shumaker for the win.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad (Steve) and I spent countless hours building this new car two days before (the race), \u201c Green said. \u201cAfter practice on Thursday, I was completely comfortable in it. Drivers and cars have to ‘fit’ together too and this just did. Add that to my years of experience competing against skilled driver, and that made it a winning combination.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Green, racing in the PRO division, started nine of the 10 scheduled races this season at HMP, winning six of those and finishing second in the other three. That allowed him to accumulate 891 points, enough to beat second-place finisher Christopher Hogan by 56 points and third-place finisher Jake Thomasson by 136. points.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cClayton captured the 2013 HMP Legend championship because of his consistency, dedication and passion for the sport,\u201d said Sarah Mandabach, race director at HMP. \u201cI have enjoyed watching Clayton improve over the years. I believe there is much more for him to come.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hogan was the top finisher in the Young Lions division with 835 points, while Roger Williams, fifth overall, was best in the Masters division with 646.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

While the season is over for Legend drivers, the championship battles continue on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Martin Chevrolet NASCAR Night in the NASCAR Fiesta Modified class, the NASCAR BWFS COKE Truck class and the NASCAR Stock cars class, as well as the Ecostock and Bandolero classes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
